It was only with the forced collectivization in the late 1940s that everything\u2014both land and farms\u2014was taken from the people, and rural life was turned upside down once and for all.   \n\nSurprisingly little research has been done on village life in Estonia during the Stalin era, even though there is an abundance of relevant material. The most telling documents of that era are the minutes of kolkhoz and sovkhoz meetings, as well as inventory records and various official notices. These contain vivid details of how the transition from one world to another proceeded \u201cofficially\u201d\u2014that is, as it was supposed to be and appear. These documents also speak to the everyday problems of life on a kolkhoz, but they also highlight the broader concerns of village life.   \n\nRare sources that offer insight into people\u2019s lives include both museum archives and personal diaries that have come directly into the possession of the author of this book. Excerpts from these diaries offer readers a unique opportunity to experience that era as the diarist lived through it. In difficult circumstances\u2014and especially during the Stalin era\u2014keeping a diary could literally be life-threatening; all the more reason for us to be grateful to these people.  \n\nThe book contains just over 100 images from museums, archives, and private collections.
